ABOUT US

Matt

After separation from the Marine Corps in 2009, Matt has held several jobs, and participated in

several destructive behaviors. Some of the things Matt has faced since separation are among the

most common associated with recently separated veterans. Matt regularly drank in excess, normally resulting in a blackout. He also fought repeatedly, mainly due to the excessive binge drinking and boredom. Lastly, Matt became extremely proficient in destroying relationships

with girlfriends and family members alike.

Eight years after separation, Matt is slowly but surely rebuilding himself and his outlook on life. Matt

understands the abundance of struggles veterans face after military separation. Through the many

available tools this facility will offer, he hopes to help his fellow veterans avoid these pitfalls.

While also providing ways in which both veterans and civilians alike can navigate through these

troubled times if needed. Matt strongly believes that through recreation, comradery, and

adrenaline-based outdoor therapy, this retreat center can help veterans through even their worst

times. Matt has a passion for adrenaline and the outdoors, and with his background in guiding and outdoor recreation, he brings that sense of adventure to Battle Born.

Matthew Erhardt is a 31 yr. old Marine Corps Veteran. He served four years as a machine gunner with his unit 2/2 Golf Company Raiders. His two deployments include:

being on the 26th MEU ,LCAC division and aboard the USS BATAAN. He served on the Syrian border in the town of Ubaydi mostly operated as a turret gunner.Occasionally dismounting for foot patrols, and IED sweeps.

Who We Are

Battle Born was created by veterans for veterans and their families. We take pride in our background, experience and want to create a space that is welcoming for those who have struggled to create a life outside of the military. The two owners and founders David Hunley and Matt Erhardt wanted a place where you can have a sense of comradery, a place you can train your mind and body. Battle-Born Inc. was invented through means of controlled chaos and fun, the nation’s Veterans can have a place where they feel at home.

David

David Hunley was born and raised in Savage MD. He enjoys hunting, fishing, shooting and being outdoors. David prides himself on being a hard worker, but plays even harder. He has a 3 year old daughter named Hadley who is his main force of motivation.

After graduation, Mr. Hunley joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. He was attached to 2nd battalion 8th Marines, Golf Company, weapons platoon. He was deployed to Ramadi, Iraq in 2007 as a light machine Gunner in support of OIF/OEF operations. There, he conducted foot and mobile patrols in the heart of Ramadi. He was also chosen to conduct joint operations with SOCOM (Special Operations Command). He was in charge of tactical training for the Iraqi army and police. When he returned from Iraq, he was placed as a squad leader where he trained junior marines until he was honorably discharged in 2010. He was awarded a certificate of accommodation for perseverance and leadership, and his unit was awarded 2 presidential unit citations for their efforts.

After his military career, Mr. Hunley fell into the slope of every day civilian life. His friends were dead, discharged or still serving. He quickly found himself drinking every day and partying. His life was going nowhere; he was depressed and felt alone with no support from his fellow brothers because they all lived in different states.

After years of depression and falling down a dark path, Mr. Hunley and a fellow Marine veteran Matthew Erhardt constructed an idea to give back and help veterans that are transitioning into civilian life. Dave's background in tactical training allows him to train and guide those who would like to hone in on their skills in a safe and controlled environment.
